Overview of the Region
CBM has been active in India for over 150 years. The work began in earnest when John and Mary McLaurin arrived in Kakinada, India in 1874, marking the start of the first independent Canadian Baptist missionary enterprise. Spanning from the lush landscapes of Southeast Asia to the expansive territories of Central Asia, this region is characterized by its rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and religious beliefs. CBM’s work in Asia is rooted in addressing socio-economic disparities and the spiritual needs of its communities, particularly those marginalized by poverty, disability, and social exclusion.
Given the vastness and diversity of the region, CBM recognizes the need for a tailored approach to each community’s needs. This approach involves close collaboration with local partners and churches, ensuring that the initiatives are culturally relevant and sustainable. Our longstanding commitment has seen various developments, from the establishment of the Star of Hope hospital in India in 1898 and the establishment of new partnerships like Operation Dawn in Thailand in 2022. By fostering environments where education, health care, and spiritual life can flourish, CBM aims to witness God’s mission across Asia—impacting lives and empowering communities to realize their God-given potential.
