We are happy to report that thanks to you, our generous donors, through the CBM Gift Catalogue this Christmas (Hopeful Gifts for Change), over $280K in funds has been raised, going directly towards projects of great need in countries like South Sudan, Bolivia, DR Congo, India, and Kenya! One of those projects was Guardians of Hope, through gifts like providing a Small Business Grant for a Family, or to Fill a Stable (that includes 654 chickens!). You helped us raise almost $25K to meet both needs! Meet Monique, who is part of a Guardians of Hope group in Kigali, Rwanda and whose life will never be the same again.
An HIV-positive mother of ten, Monique joined the group in 2005. Each year, she receives personal care products like toothpaste and soap, medicine, rabbits, and a small loan from the group that help her raise livestock for income. When she first joined the group, she was lonely and ashamed. “I used to see myself as corpse. Now I consider myself as I was raised from the dead!” The greatest challenge she faced is that she always thought that she was a burden to her friend and family, being in the hospital most of the time and relying on the people around her to help her. Her last born also died of AIDS. “People used to look at us as we were not human,” Monique remembers. But joining Guardians of Hope helped bring humanity back into her life. “Back then, the place was very poor and people were not working together to help each other. The group was a good opportunity for me as a woman to meet other people, share ideas and support each other emotionally and economically. Now I go to different places and meetings where I volunteer to talk to people about getting tested, taking care of themselves and then living healthy lives.”
Now, Monique can say that she is truly living. As a result of her gaining her health and life back, she adopted one teenager and is supporting her in school – something that before may have been unthinkable, but today, is entirely possible. Thank you for your contributions in bringing true hope and joy to Monique’s life, and many others just like her.
